Historical treatment of the mentally ill can only be described as horrific. Doctors often relied on new and unproven techniques to cure what they didn’t understand, while patients suffered through not just the debilitating treatments but stigmas that had them locked up in institutions and asylums. The photos in this link, some disturbing, highlight this bygone era, and though the stigma remains an issue, preventing as many as 50% from seeking help, the treatment itself has improved (mostly).
