Welcome to Weekend Writing Warriors, where participants share excerpts of their books or works-in-progress. It’s a fun way to sample new books and find new authors! Be sure to check out their website. Today’s selection comes from my book, Stay With Me (the full synopsis is below). This week, we hear from Alma: Noah has spent the better part of the day with her. And while she’s been resistant to forming any kind of relationship, she doesn’t mind enjoying a temporary moment with him. She makes a move on Noah, but he turns her down, in a chivalrous desire to get to know her first. Alma doesn’t take the rejection well and runs off to the restroom to collect herself.
Alma peered into the dimly-lit bathroom mirror: her eye make-up was smudged, and her long hair was bothering her. Frustrated, she pulled out her make-up case and hairbrush; she cleaned up the smudges and applied a thick coating of black eye-liner, then she brushed her hair back into a messy-bun. She stared at herself again, her eyes bold and commanding—she liked the look, liked the way it made her feel.
Just like sex: Alma had always been comfortable in her skin, enjoying the way her body was soft, round and feminine. She was made for sex—she appreciated and loved it; sometimes it even drove her, but nothing so consuming that she trolled clubs and street corners looking for a quick lay. She just loved the adrenaline rush she got from it.
So for Noah to deny her…
You scared him, she chastised herself, you came on too strong, you always come on too strong.
