Welcome to Weekend Writing Warriors, where participants share excerpts of their books or works-in-progress. It’s a fun way to sample new books and find new authors! Be sure to check out their website. Today’s selection comes from my book, Stepmothers Anonymous (the full synopsis is below). Abbey’s life has grown more complicated with her newfound telekinetic powers. She continues to practice, her daughter Zoë the only one aware of them, but even as she makes progress, she quickly discovers it’s the little things that derail her — like a visit from Tabitha, her stepdaughter’s godmother…
The others were too engrossed in the conversation to notice Bradley, until the door opened and he walked in, asking whose car was parked in the driveway. Sara got up and pulled him to the table, prattling away about Tabitha. He smiled when he saw her…Tabitha, though, took it one step further: she threw her arms around him and kissed him on his mouth.
I was appalled: I knew she wasn’t shy but to walk into my home and kiss my husband like she was the one married to him…who exactly did she think she was? And to make matters worse, Bradley wasn’t as shocked as I was; on the contrary, he was holding her with disconcerting familiarity.
Zoë tugged at my sleeve, an alarmed expression on her face. She nodded over to the counter, where several plates and a knife were rising above the surface. I quickly forced the plates and knife back down, then forced myself to relax; after all, it was just a kiss between old friends, right?
