The Immortal Ana Ruiz (Serial Novel)
Ana Ruiz Davis is a twenty-something, Afro-Latina college student, still living at home with her family. With graduation on the horizon, Ana starts to consider her life as an adult, but the thought of moving out on her own and ‘adulting’ has her paralyzed. But because she is the older, obedient child, always helpful and never contrary, all Ana can do is mask the fear she feels inside and carry on like nothing is wrong. She wants to be brave and live an adventurous life, but she doesn’t know how to get past the fear of going out into a world she doesn’t easily fit into. Then her great-grandmother passes away. Ana assists in the funeral preparations and then in the clearing out of her great-grandmother’s estate, where she comes across a journal that tells the story of the ‘Immortal Ana Ruiz’—the woman, apparently, for whom Ana is named. Though the author is unknown, Ana dives into the journal, delighted to read about a woman who was bold, adventurous, and fearless. Ana is enthralled with the tale, desiring to live in a world much like her namesake, but when life takes a downward turn, and the truth about the journal is revealed, Ana has to decide if she’s going to continue hiding away from the world or make her own place in it.
